1、 Advantages of railway transportation
Large transportation capacity
The volume of railway transportation is much greater than that of road transportation. The load capacity of a regular freight train is generally around 3000-10000 tons, while the load capacity of a heavy-duty railway train can reach tens of thousands of tons. For example, the Daqin Railway is an important coal transportation channel in China, with a heavy load train formation of about 20000 tons. The characteristic of this large capacity makes it very suitable for large-scale, long-distance transportation of goods, such as coal, ore, steel and other bulk commodities.
In terms of passenger transportation, a regular passenger train can also carry thousands of passengers, and the number of seats on high-speed trains generally ranges from 500 to over 1000. For example, China's CRH380A high-speed train, with a standard formation of 8 carriages and a passenger capacity of 556 people, can efficiently meet the travel needs of a large number of passengers when operating in multiple units (two trains connected together), with a passenger capacity of over 1000 people.
Fast speed and high punctuality rate
Railway transportation is fast, especially high-speed railways. The operating speed of high-speed railways in China is generally between 200-350 kilometers per hour, which can achieve rapid connections between cities in a short period of time. For example, the high-speed railway from Beijing to Shanghai takes only over 4 hours at the fastest, greatly reducing the time and space distance between the two places.
Railway transportation operates according to a fixed timetable, with a relatively high punctuality rate. The railway system has strict scheduling and operation management, and unless there are special circumstances such as extreme weather, natural disasters, or major equipment failures, trains can generally arrive at their destination according to the scheduled time. This is very important for passengers to arrange their itinerary and for goods to be delivered on time. For example, when arranging production plans, enterprises can accurately calculate the arrival time of raw materials based on the punctuality of railway transportation.
High energy efficiency
Railway transportation has shown outstanding performance in energy efficiency. From the perspective of energy consumption per unit of transportation volume, railway transportation is more energy-efficient than road transportation. For example, the energy consumption per ton kilometer of railway transportation is about 1/3-1/4 of that of road transportation. This is because during the operation of railway trains, due to the low rolling friction between their wheels and rails, and the flexible adjustment of train formation according to transportation needs, the traction power can be fully utilized under full load conditions, thereby reducing unit energy consumption.
Meanwhile, with the development of technology, the energy utilization methods of railway locomotives are constantly being optimized. The widespread use of electric locomotives has further improved energy efficiency and reduced environmental pollution compared to traditional diesel locomotives.
